Today's Comic
Phew... this one was a lot of work. I really like how that first panel turned out. The perspective, the composition. I like it. The last panel was time consuming and I was in a crunch to get it done for today.
So, that's what we call an establishing shot...
Next week's... I plan to make easier.
Behind the Scenes
To build the first frame I used a 3D block model of a torii gate I found on Sketchfab. I composed the shot with some planes to represent the walls and stairs and a blockout for Catherine. The rest of the magic, well that's just sketching and painting in Clip Studio until I got what I liked.
3D mock-up of the torii gate in Blender.
I made some new brushes for the vegetation and painted them in Bob Ross style. In my case, block out the silhouette and then use a scatter brush and dab in some highlight to give the semblance of trees.
Sloppy? But, it works and it's done.
I try not to do a lot of scenes like this because I know it takes a lot of time, but I'm satisfied with what I got done.
I didn't fill in Catherine's face in that first panel, but I really like how it looks the way it is. So there's no need to add any more shapes or brush strokes to this one.
I hope you're having a good weekend. See you next weekend...
